Use of solar water heaters in Malaysia

Solar water heating and solar crop drying holds much promise in Malaysia. While the latter is still in the R + D stage, the former is commercially available in the country. However, up to the present moment, solar water heaters have not been very successfully adopted in Malaysia in terms of widespread use. The deterrents are mainly attributed to long term recovery periods associated with high capital cost when compared with conventional heaters. Further, the lack of well proven and reliable demonstration units has not helped to overcome public resistance to change and also to win public confidence. This paper attempts to present an up-to-date costing method to evaluate the economic viability of domestic solar water heaters. The significant elements affecting the economic potential are capital cost, interest rate and increase in fuel price. Generally, the break-even period compared with conventional heating is 5 years
