Techno-economic suitability of palm oil for food products in the U.K. [United Kingdom] market [rape-seed oil, soybean oil]

United Kingdom is one of the major importers and one of the oldest established users of palm oil in Europe. There are stiff market competition between soyabean oil, rapeseed oil and palm oil. Problems such as (1) increase in production of rapeseed oil (2) Higher duty of 12% on processed palm oil (3) the general shift in the consumption of vegetable oils and fats and the price of palm oil being at its premium are discussed. The suitability of palm oil in food products like margarine, compound cooking fats and as a frying media is also discussed. Palm oil is found to be relatively competitive and cost effective due to its increased usage. Despite the premiums, palm oil consumption increased in compound cooking fats sector, industrial frying oil applications, retail cooking fats, confectionery fats etc. U.K.'s import of processed palm oil is still high. Other areas of utilization could be exploited. The price prospects seem to be good
