Seasonal changes in total nitrogen and total nonstructural carbohydrates contents in leaves and stem apexes of Litchi chinensis sonn. var. Hong-huay [Studied in Thailand]

The TN content in leaves and stem apexes showed a similar trend, with higher levels found in leaves. TN seemed to accumulate slowly from January to August then to rise until October. It remained stable till November then decreased in December. The TNC contents in leaves and stem apexes was almost equal and followed the same trend by gradual decline from January to December. During the periods of accumulation the TNC content in leaves and stem apexes accumulated to the maximal level in April and August respectively. There were significant differences in TN and TNC contents in leaves among trees, but differences were found in stem apexes. Positive correlations were found between TN in leaves or in stem apexes and their age, TN in leaves and rainfall, TNC in stem apexes and temperature, TNC in stem apexes and TNC in leaves and also between TN in stem apexes and TN in leaves. Negative relationships were found between TNC in stem apexes and their age, TNC and TN content in leaves and also that in stem apexes. There was no observed relationship between the age of leaves and their TNC content; between rainfall and TNC in leaves, TNC or TN in stem apexes, or between temperature and TNC in leaves, TN in leaves, or TN in stem apexes. The litchi trees flowered twice a year, first in January and again in Septenber (off season flowering). Leaf flushing occurred on some trees every month of the year. The tagged shoots which flushed leaves in January flushed again in October through December
