The new scale differs from the Standard Evaluation Scale (SES) in that severity is based on the amount of infection on the 3 uppermost leaves and sheath and not on the relative position of the uppermost lesion along the sheath area. Varietal differences due to leaf infection was, therefore, an added criterion in the evaluation of resistance. Another feature of the new scale is the consideration of a relative damage value for each grade which was computed arbitrarily relative to yield loss.
