Responses of sorghum genotypes to plant densities and planting methods

In experiment I, eighteen crosses from sorghum breeding program were compared with PB Hegari and KU 257 under two plant densities (126,200 and 165,300 plants/ha.) in a split plot design with four replications. The results indicated that plant densities had no significant effect on plant height, number of leaves per plant, flowering dates, number of branches per head and seed weight. An increase in plant density caused an increase in leaf area index (LAI), number of heads per unit area and grain yield. Head length, head width, number of seeds per head, head weight and seed weight per head decreased with increasing plant density. There were differences among sorghum genotypes in all of the characters investigated. In experiment II, a split plot design with 4 replications was laid out to study the planting method in sorghum. Four sorghum varieties namely: KU 301, KU 305, KU 306, and KU 257 served as the main plots. The results indicated that plant height and head weight were affected by varieties and planting methods. Flowering dates and number of heads per unit area, on the other hand, were not different among varieties and planting methods. Head length, head width, number of seeds per branch, number of branches per head, number of seeds per head, seed weight per head, seed weight and grain yield were different among varieties whereas planting methods showed no effect on these characteristics. However, the 65 x 30 cm. spacing with 3 plants per hill tended to outyield the other planting methods. Based on yield performance and practicableness in the field, the 65 x 30 cm. spacing with 3 plants per hill is recommended as the planting method of sorghum for farmers
