Productivity of improved and traditional upland rice in Zamboanga del Sur, Philippines
1985
Tautho, C.C. | Flinn, J.C. | Velasco, L.E.
Improved upland rice varieties (UPL Ri-5, UPL Ri-7) were more productive and profitable than farmer's local upland rice varieties in Zamboanga del Sur in 1983. IVs [improved] production also increased the demand for hired labor. Thus, on efficiency (productivity) and equity (employment) grounds IVs appear more attractive than LVs [traditional or locally grown]. However, the higher cost of IV technology may make it less attractive to poor farmers or to those without access to credit. Farmers also favor the quality of LV upland rices which are often principally grown for home consumption. Therefore, it is important to identify and popularize high quality varieties and associated crop husbandry which will generate high, but stable yields recognizing the resource constraints faced by poor upland rice farmers.
