Cofuna [organic fertilizer] - an economical and effective soil ameliorant from mud press/bagasse [from sugarcane]

A French process for rapid conversion of mudness or bagasse or a mixture of them into high-grade organic fertilizer was developed and tried in large scale in Europe and South America. A wide range of cellulolitic, ligninolitic, proteolitic, nitrifiers and nitrogen-fixing bacteria with 2.7 billion viable bacteria per gram was developed. This bacteria, popularly known as Cofuna S.B. is inseminated or mixed with the mud press at 10%/90% bacteria/mudpress ratio and allowed to decompose for two months. The resulting product is a high-grade organic fertilizer based on biological activity. It initiates fermentation to decompose organic matter in the soil into humus. At the same time, growth substances are released and bacterial life in the soil is increased. The typical application rate is 1 to 2 tons compost per hectare. Studies made in sugarcane applications in Mexico, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Panama, Argentina, Switzerland, Brazil and lately in the Philippines showed increase in yield per hectare from 25% to 50% in commercial fertilizer usage
