Mixed stands were more effective in reducing leaf blast than neck blast. Since neck blast incidence has a more direct effect on yield loss than does leaf blast, mixtures that give better neck blast control would be more likely to give higher yields. Two possible ways of gaining better control are using cultivars and lines with more dissimilar genetic background than used in the experiments, and using more than three components in the mixture
