Growth and yield of corn (Zea mays L.) as affected by soil water stress at different growth stages [Suwan 1 variety]

An experiment on the effect of soil water stress at different growth, yield, and water use efficiency of corn (Suwan 1 variety) was conducted at The National Corn and Sorghum Research Center, Pakchong, Nakorn Rajsima province during the dry season (December 1979 to March 1980). The water stress condition was imposed on corn plots by omitting 2 irrigation cycles (total of 21 days non-irrigation) during 3 growth stages: namely, vegetative stage (age 18-38 days), silking stage (age 39-59 days), and ear-filling stage (age 60-80 days). All other possible combinations of stress period plus the treatment of no stress (control) were also examined. Result drawn from the experiment are (1) Water stress at the vegetative stage resulted in a pronounced decrease of shoot growth (2) At the end of the growing season the difference in dry weight between plots having stress at vegetative and silking stages was insignificant (3) A cycle of 7 days of irrigation period was appropriate for production of field corn in dry season under non-limiting amount of water
