Considerations on appropriate weed control concepts for developing economies in the tropics

Under tropical and subtropical cropping conditions, the technology adopted for controlling weeds is closely linked to the liability of soils to erosion, and to the ability of smaller-scale farmers to purchase technological inputs so as to expand the size of their holdings or to increase the area of land under cultivation. Introduction of chemical weed control into this environment requires rather different considerations and concepts than those relevant to temperature zone agriculture in developed economies. Arguments against the two extremes - inefficient handweeding and weed-free crop maintenance using high rates of herbicides with correspondingly high costs are developed. The equilibrium between nitrogen-fertilization and the degree of weed control must be optimised since yield is particularly sensitive to this.
