Effect of para rubber seed meal on the performance of growing pig (15-20 kg.) [Large White]

Two experiments were conducted to study the effects of para rubber seed meal (PRSM) on the performance of growing-finishing pigs (15-90 kg.). The PRSM was incorporated into the experimental diets at levels of 0, 10, 20 and 30 percent. Sixty growing pigs (large white with approximately 15 kg. body weight) were used in the completely randomized design experiment. In experiment 1, the results indicated that pigs in the control diet had a significantly (p.05) higher percentage of feed digestibility than the diets containing 10, 20 and 30 percent PRSM. However, there were no significant differences in digestible energy, metabolisable energy and biological value among these feeds. In experiment 2, the pigs on 20 percent PRSM in the diet had a significantly (p.05) higher growth rate than that on the control. Pigs on 10 and 30 percent PRSM in the diets also had higher growth rate than the control; however, the differences were not statistically significant. Pigs fed with 20 and 30 percent PRSM in the diets also had a significantly (p.05) shorter time to attain the market weight than the control. Feed conversion, cost per unit of body weight gain, age and weight at the first estrus of the animals in these 4 groups showed no significant differences. No clinical toxicity symptoms were observed in the pigs fed with PRSM up to 30 percent in the diets. The PRSM diets did not deteriorate the carcass quality of the pigs and there was a tendency for higher lean content in swine fed with diets containing PRSM. The results of these experiments clearly indicated that PRSM could be included in the diets of growing-finishing pigs at the level of 20-30 percent
