Tests were conducted in greenhouse during 1980 to 1983, to determine whether new biotypes of brown planthopper (BPH) migrated into the rice field of Korea [R.]. Local collections of the insect were termed biotypes 1,2 and 3, using seedling bulk test with differential rice varieties. The observation results showed that in 1980 and 1981, BPH biotype 1 was predominant species accounting for 81.8 and 91.7%, respectively, whereas biotype 2 constituted 18.2 and 8.3%. In 1982 and 1983 biotype 2 was 10.3 and 1.3%, and biotype 3 was 11.5 and 26.7%, respectively
