The effect of the utilized material, fallen leaves of larch (Larix kaempferi), digested in 0.25N NaOH or HCl solution on the energy metabolism of chicks and the component changes of the cellulosics in the digestive tract of chicks were investigated. The cell content or hemicellulose fractions of the fallen leaves of larch contain an unknown substance which decreases metabolizable energy and energy retention and increases heat production in growing chicks, and it appeared that the substances will be removed by NaOH or HCl treatment
