A study on the inheritance of some characters in two cultivars of papaya (Carica papaya L.)

The study on the inheritance of fruit weight, fruit shape, cavity percentageickness and firmness of flesh, and total soluble solids of papaya consisted of two experiments. Experiment I, Line 10 Solo, Cocoa, and F1 showed no significant difference in cavity percentage but there were significant findings in thickness and firmness of flesh. The last two characters, however, displayed no significant difference in plants within generations. Heterosis was detected in fruit weight, thickness and firmness of flesh and total soluble solids when compared with F1 with mid-parent. In experiment II, Line 10 Solo, cocoa, F1, F2, BC1, BC2, were studied using generation mean analysis. Characters controlled mostly by additive gene effects were fruit weight, fruit shape, thickness of flesh and total soluble solids. High narrow sense heritability was found in fruit weight, thickness and firmness of flesh and total soluble solids. Simple mass selection or other recurrent selection methods can be employed for cultivar improvement for these characters. In both experiments, significant positive correlation was shown in fruit weight and thickness, thickness and firmness, while negative correlation was found in fruit shape and percent total soluble solids (% TSS). Selection for smaller and shorter fruits tends to decrease thickness and firmness of flesh but increase per cent TSS
