The relationship between dry matter production and seed yield in five mungbean varieties [PAG-ASA, CES-14, CES-87, Uthong, Native var.]

The study of the relationship between dry matter production and seed yield in five mungbean varieties PAG-ASA, CES-14, CES-87, and U-Thong 1 and local variety was conducted. Results showed that local mungbean variety had the highest total dry matter per plant and the highest stem dry matter as well, while CES-14 had the highest root and leaf dry matter. The number of seeds per pod and the rate of grain filling period were also the highest in CES-14. U-Thong 1, the recommended variety in Thailand produced the highest height, the greatest number of nodes per plant and also the largest seed size. However, total seed yield in U-Thong 1 was much less than CES-14 and PAG-ASA. The variety CES-14 which produced the highest number of seed yield produced the highest harvest index value and higher value for yield components compared with the other four varieties. Thus, the assimilate produced by CES-14 plant at the vegetative stage was efficiently transferred to the reproductive parts and became seed yield. The positive relationship between the seed harvest index and seed yield per plant and per unit area was developed.
