[Analysis of catches of Norway lobsters by traps in the Velebit channel [Nephros norvegicus L., Yugoslavia]]

In this paper the analysis of Norway lobsters (Nephros norvegicus L.)caught in trap-nets in Velebit channel (Adriatic Sea, Yugoslavia) is carried out. The material has been collected three times in the period August-early September 1982. The lobsters were caught with trap-nets for small shellfish, with the mesh size of 18, 19 and 20 mm.The size of the trapnets was:lenght 60-71 cm, width 40-50 cm, height 30-35 cm. Trap lines with 25-30 trap-nets were used. 910 samples of Norway lobsters were caught (506 male, i.e. 55.6% and 404 female, i.e. 44.4%, 191 of which (47.3%) were without external eggs and 213 (52.7%) with external eggs). There were 67, i.e. 7.4% immature individuals. The males had the longest bodies (11.99-12.82), then the females with internal eggs and the shortest were the females with external eggs (10.55-11.42). The collective results of average body lenght compared with the mesh size show that with the mesh size increase the body lenght increases also by minor values. With the mesh size increase the immature individuals percentage decreases. Catching Norway lobsters with trap-nets with 18 cm mesh size fits into legal regulations, since the number of caught immature individuales is 2.5 times lower than the legally permitted 20%. It is figured that the average daily Norway lobsters catch in 150 trap-nets can be about 10 kg, depending on several factors. Catching Norway lobsters with trap-nets is less harmful to the population than catching with fishing nets.
