Hematologic and cytogenetic changes as a result of irradiation with high-energy x-rays [goats]

Changes occurring in the blood picture and frequency of lesions of chromosomes in goats irradiated with high-energy X-rays were investigated. The experiment included 12 male animals, 2-3 years old, 24-28 kg of weight, which were divided into 2 groups with 6 animals each (groups A and B). Group A was irradiated once with the total dose of 2.00 Gy and group B with the dose of 2.60 Gy. Difference in the degree of damages of the cytogenetic material with increased dose was noticed, and the degree of lesions was more notable. The first changes occurred already during the first 24 hours after irradiation, and manifested in the notable decrease of leucocytes and thrombocytes and in the increased number of structural damages of chromosomes (breakage, acentric fragments, specific translocations, occurrence of tetraploidy). In the investigated interval of time a slow decrease of the number of chromosome aberrations was noticed in the samples in the 168 th hour in animals from group B. The authors assume that this is a consequence of the elimination of a large number of lethally damaged cells from the circulation. It is stated in the conclusion that the degree of damage of cytogenetic material in the irradiated animals is in proportion with the quantity of absorbd energy and ionization density to a certain volume, and that there are smaller or bigger physiological changes, depending on the radiation dose, i.e. on the number of damaged cells.
