Urease activity, urea hydrolysis and nitrogen economy in Bangladesh soils

Urease activity of Bangladesh soils varied from 77 to 386 (ppm urea-N hydrolyzed in 5 hours) and the studied soils may be arranged as Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm, Barind, Modhupur, Nurnagor, Pakuria, Ruppur, Tea and Kosh soils. Mean rate of hydrolysis varied from 7.41 to 0.17 ppm urea-N per hour. Urea hydrolyzing capacity of Kosh and Tea soils was extremely low. Higher soil pH and higher organic carbon content increased urease activity while higher sand content tended to decrease it. Trends of urea hydrolysis significantly followed a second degree curve in all the 30.60 and 120 ppm urea-N application rates. Results suggested that combined effects of higher urease activity and higher pH produced higher rates of urea hydrolysis and thus higher loss of nitrogen from most of the samples. Urea may be tested as a fertilizer for tea soils having higher urease activity.
