Effect of weight of suckers on the growth and yield of banana [in Bangladesh]

Sword suckers of five different weights (1.5, 2.3, 3.0, 3.8 and 4.9 kg) on the vegetative growth of plant and bunch characteristics were studied at the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. Suckers of bigger sizes had greater plant height and girth almost throughout the period of growth, and showed earlier bunch emergence. The suckers weighing 1.5; 2.3 and 3.0 kg were very close in producing number of hands and fingers per bunch, and in weight of bunch which were significantly higher than those of the biggest sucker (4.9 kg). Crop period was maximum (407.5 days) in suckers of 1.5 kg and the minimum (348.9 days) in the 4.9 kg while others were in between. Considering the different aspects, sword suckers of 2.3 kg and 3.0 kg in weight with the age of 75 + 15 and 105 + 15 days respectively were found to be better planting materials of banana cv. Amritasagar
