Insect pests of mango and their control in Bangladesh
1985
Azim, I.I.
About 24 species of insects attack mango in Bangladesh. The important ones are mango hoppers, mango shoot gall psyllid, mango fruit weevil, mango stem borer and mango mealy bug of which the former two are mainly responsible for the damage. Among them the mango hopper is the most prevalent and serious occuring throughout the country attacking all improved as well as local seeded varieties. They suck sap from the leaves and inflorescence resulting in the dropping of flowers and fruits. Generally, Chemical treatment with malathion (0.05%) lebaycid (0.04%) or dimecron (0.04) is practised to control the pest. Mango shoot gall psyllid, Apsylla cistellata (Buckton) emerged as a major pest during late seventies in Bangladesh. The damage is caused due to the formation of galls because of embryonic feeding in situ which adversely affect flowering and fruiting.
