Effects of nitrogen and potassium on yield, value and chemical composition of Basma tobacco

Field experiments were conducted in 1973-1975 at Xanthi, Greece, to determine the effects of N and K fertilizationrates on the yield, value and chemical composition of Basma tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L. cv BX 2/a) leaves. Nitrogen was applied at rates of 20, 40, 60 and 80 kg/ha and potassium at rates of 30, 60, 90 and 120 kg/ha. There was a trend for leaf yield and value to increase as applied nitrogen increased from 20 to 60 kg/ha. Further increase of nitrogen to 80 kg/ha tended to decrease value of tobacco. Burning capacity and percentage of Ca tended to increase as applied nitrogen increased from 20 to 80 kg/ha, whereas the percentage of total alkaloids, total N and Mg increased significantly as applied nitrogen increased from 20 to 60 kg/ha. Yield, value and percentage of total alkaloids, total N and Mg were not significantly affected by the rates of applied potassium. There was only a trend for burning capacity and percentage of leaf K to increase, while percentage of leaf Ca tended to decrease as applied potassium increased from 30to 120 kg/ha. Generally, for production of a good yield and quality of Basma tobacco in soils similar to that of Petinos, Xanthi, the rate of applied nitrogen should be higher than 20 kg/ha but lower than 60 kg/ha, whereas the rate of applied potassium should be higher than 30 kg/ha but lower than 90 kg/ha
