The S1 lines derived from an open-pollinated population PCB 102 and its irradiated version, PCB 102 R, were studied for the induction of genetic variation following mutagenesis. The mean values showed significant and positive shift for ear girth only. The variances and frequency distribution showed an increasing trend for number of days to flowering and plant height. The heritability values increased by 10% for number of days to floweing, 6% for plant height and 12% for ear girth following irradiation. The increase in heritability showed induction of genetic variation that may be exploited in intra-population improvement programmes or by deriving new inbred lines
