Isolation of zero erucic and yellow seeded strain of mustard

An extensive screening of 88 diverse mustard (Brassica juncea (L) czern) collections for the erucic acid content of the seed oil was undertaken with a view to isolate strains with low or zero erucic fatty acid. The data broadly classified the entire mustard germplasm into European and Asian groups, with the former possessing 27.4 to 35.3% and the latter 45.2 to 53.7% erucic acid content in their seed oil. Further, subgrouping within each group with slight overlaping was indicated. A new strain ZSYM/854 (Zero erucic selection yellow mustard) was isolated from a collection B.J. 854, which had its origin from the Hindukush area of Afghanistan. It is likely that this new strain may provide the breeders of Indian subcontinent a tool to genetically manipulate the qualitative improvement of the seed oil of mustard, where this crop is grown extensively
