Zinc and phosphate nutrition to some grain legumes in relation to their tolerance under varied soil conditions

Drymatter yield of gram (Cicer arietinum) was reduced by 52 % under acid soil condition but only 29 % under saline soil condition, as compared to normal soil situation. With the application of fertilizers there was significant increase in yield to the extent of 76, 63 and 54 % under acid, saline and normal soil conditions, respectively. In saline soil, P utilization was more when P and zinc were applied together. Pea (Pisum sativum) appeared more tolerant to saline soil condition as compared to gram, while khesari (Lathyrus sativus) was the least tolerant. Higher dose of phosphorus (80kg P2O5/ha) was needed for gram and khesari, while for pea 40kg P2O5/ha was adequate. Further, khesari assimilated N and P more efficiently, pea absorbed more of Ca and Mg, while gram showed greater absorption of K.
