Protein production from cassava [Manihot esculenta] by Cephalosporium eichhorniae
1984
Charoensiri, K.
High yields of microbial biomass protein can be obtained from Cephalosporium eichhorniae 152. The fungus was grown on cassava (2.5%) with an added nitrogen source in 5 litre fermenters at 45 deg C an pH 3.8. The pH was controlled by the automatic addition of NaOH or H3PO4 or H2SO4. The total yield (g/1) or dry weight obtained from each experiment using different nitrogen sources, (NH4)2SO4, urea an NH4NO3, was 14.4, 13.9 an 13.3 respectively. The protein content was 38.75%, 33.5% an 38% respectively when (NH4)2SO4, urea an NH4NO3 was used as a nitrogen source. The total cost of components used in these studies ranged from $1.00 to $1.06. The fungus was also grown on cassava (5%) in a 75 litre fermenter. The protein content was 37.5% when urea was used as a nitrogen source, an the cost per kg protein obtained was $1.01
