The addition of mercury chloride and Panogen Metox (seed staining agent) influence the nitrification in soils. The lower nitrate concentration after incubation seems to be partially compensated for by higher ammonium concentration. The total content of inorganic nitrogen, however, also seems to be decreased by higher mercury contents. Liming increases the mineralization of nitrogen, but mercury still has some toxic effect on the nitrification
