Nitrogen application to four strawberry cultivars grown on plastic mulch

The strawberry cultivars 'Senga Sengana', 'Zefyr', 'Jonsok' and 'Glima' were grown on black plastic mulch during four years and fertilized with 0, 130 and 260 kg N/ha just before planting. The highest N rate resulted in reduced number of flowers and lower yield per plant. Heavy N application at planting had little subsequent effect on the N content of the strawberry leaves. The optimal range of N in 'Jonsok' and 'Glima' was found to be 1.6 - 2.1 % of leaf dry matter, while the lower limit of the optimal range of 'Senga Sengana' was 1.8 % N
