Addition of high amounts of lead or chloride salts influence the nitrification processes in soil. If the additions are above a certain level, the nitrate formed during aerobic incubation decrease as the additions increase, while the ammonium content increase. The sum of NO3-N and NH4-N after incubation seem to be nearly constant for peat while clay and limed sandy loam show reduced organic nitrogen content if the lead content is increased. The explanation of these results could be that formation of ammonium goes on without interference from the added salts, while the processes responsible for the oxidation to nitrite and nitrate are interrupted by lead and chloride. Different lead salts give various results depending on the anions concerned and their solubility
