Beak measurements: possible alternate method for sex determination in doves

A total of 256 stuffed specimens of 4 species of doves, namely; Macropygia phasienellatenuirostris, Phapiteron amethystina mindanaoensis, Ptilinopus occipitalis and Phapiteronleucotis brevirostris were used in the study. In addition to the body weight (1) of the doves, 7 other parameters and some of their ratios were considered for sex determination. Parameters were beak length (11), straight distance from tip of upper beak to anterior edge of cere (111), straight distance from anterior edge of cere to base of feathers on forehead (1V), width of cere at base of feathers on forehead (V), width of cere at anterior edge (V1), width of beak (V11), and straight distance from tip of the ventral portion of lower beak to mandibular ramue (V111). The ratios were 111/11, 1V/11, 111/1V, V1/11, V/11, V11/11, 111/V111, and 1V/V111. Results showed that sexing doves using beak measurements is not reliable specially for the 4 species studied due to site variations. However, there are some parameters that can be of limited use in sexing birds within a locality or collection site.
