Breeding and management of ducks for meat and egg production; study 2: heterosis in the growing and laying performance characteristics of Muscovy ducks
1985
Arboleda, C.R. | Kharel, M.
Results showed that growth rate increased with increase in heterozygosity level in the progeny types. Growth rate was higher in the F1 of the reciprocal crosses between the pure black and white varieties than the F2's of the backcrosses. The F1 hybrids were also more efficient in feed conversion than the pure black or white varieties. Mortality was less than 5% in all progeny types. Egg production and egg weight fertility and hatchability were also significantly improved among the F1 hybrid ducks compared to the pure breds. To enable the farmers to improve the productivity in meat and eggs of their Muscovy ducks, it is recommended that selected pure black and white varieties may be kept as breeders for the production of F1 hybrid ducks from which the males maybe raised for meat up to 8 or 10 weeks old and the females maybe kept to laying age
