The effect of topping on the area of the standard leaves represented by the 10th leaf could not be separated from the variety. For the top leaves (20th and above), topping resulted in leaf area increase at 19%. Specific leaf weight of topped plants was heavier compared to the untopped in primings 6 to 9. Yield (2.9 t/ha) and crop value (P24,422) were higher compared to the untopped (2.5 t/ha, P20,018). Balikbayan had the largest leaf area of the 20th leaf and NCBY produced the highest number of leaves (34). These 2 varieties gave the highest grade index (4.98 and 5.27) and crop value (P25,573 and P26,467) while Coker 86 had the lowest (3.69, P20,276). NCBY gave the heaviest specific leaf weight, Balikbayan the least and the rest were intermediate
