Evaluation of trap crops in relation to pest incidence in flue-cured tobacco var Coker 254

Budworm (Helicoverpa spp.), cutworm (Spodoptera litura) and bush katydid (Phanoroptera furcifera ) were the major insect pests observed in tobacco. Semi-looper (Chrysodiexes chalcytes), winged aphid and cone headed grasshoper (Euconocephalus varius) were the minor ones. Beetle (lady bird and leaf beetle) and mirid bug (Cyrtopeltis tenuis) were noted on both crops while spiders were encountered only in tobacco. The highest population of budworm (1.12/10 plants) and cutworm (12.2/10 plants) was observed on tomato and wingless aphid in cowpea (76.8/10 plants). Plots with three rows of tobacco in between two rows of cowpea had the highest number of winged aphids (12.2/10 plants). Plots with three rows of tobacco in between two rows of corn had the highest degree of foliage feeders. Virus and wilt were the only diseases observed among the tobacco plants
