Influence of nutrition on the incidence of fatty liver hemorrhagic syndrome in poultry

The overall incidence of Fatty Liver Hemorrhagic Syndrome (FLHS) in quail fed diets based on milo as the carbohydrate source was 33%; those fed corn or sucrose based diets, 22%; and those fed either glucose or wheat diets showed only a 5% incidence of FLHS. Differing slightly from the results obtained with quail, FLHS in laying hens was most prevalent in birds fed corn, milo and sucrose-soy diets in that order. Significant gross and hispathological lesions were observed in all FLHS mortalities and in livers of all birds given hemorrhagic scores of 4 and above. Reticulolysis was demonstrated in the livers of all birds that exhibited hepatic hemorrhages. Of the several nutritional variables studied, it seems that consumption of relatively high energy, low protein, amino acid deficient diet is the primary causative factor responsible for the induction of FLHS in both species
