The feeding value of camote [Ipomoea batatas (Linn) Poir] for early weaned pigs

Results of experiment 1 indicated no significant differences between treatments in feed efficiency, feed intake and daily gain in weight of pigs, indicating that camote can replace corn in the diet of early weaned pigs. Metabolism trial done on the same diet showed higher (P.05) digestibility of nutrients in camote diets compared to corn diet. Cooking and enzyme treatments of camote failed to improved the digestibility of the different nutrients except for crude fiber whoe se digestibility was improved (P.05) by enzyme treatment. In experiment 2, sugar supplementation of camote diet increased feed intake of pigs by 13.28% and improved daily gain and feed efficiency by 16.27 and 2.60%, respectively. Moreover, when both sugar and oil were added to the camote diet, growth rate was increased by 21.16% and feed efficiency by 10.50%. Oil supplementation alone failed to improve the performance of the weanling pigs
