In experiment 1 the protein source was isolated soybean protein. The average daily feed intake (ADF) and the average daily gains (ADG) of pigs fed the diet containing corn starch were lower (P.05) than that of the pigs fed the diets containing glucose or sucrose which were similar. However, gain over feed ratios (G/F) were similar among the three treatment groups. Crude protein, energy, ash and dry matter digestibilities obtained for the group fed corn starch were greater (P.05) than that obtained for the groups fed glucose or sucrose which were similar. These results indicate that glucose and sucrose were equally well utilized by 8-day old pigs based on performance and nutrient utilization. However, pigs fed diets containing corn starch consumed less (P.05) diet per day which resulted in a lower ADG compared glucose and sucrose groups. In Experiment 2, the ADG, G/F, and the crude protein, either extract and dry matter digestibilities, and the serum levels of total glucose, total protein and urea nitrogen were similar among all three dietary treatments. The results of this experiment clearly indicate that the lower ADG obtained with the pigs fed the diet containing corn starch in Experiment 1 was primarily due to the reduced average daily diet consumption and not to an impaired nutrient utilization of the corn starch
