Utilization of low quality rough rice by finishing pigs

Proximate analyses of the rough rice gave the following values: crude protein, 6.4%; other extract, 0.63%; crude fiber, 9.38%; ash, 5.22% and gross energy, 3492 KCal/Kg. Average daily gain (ADG) of pigs fed the diet containing 50% rough rice was higher (P.05) than that of pigs fed the diet containing no rough rice. Similarly, feed efficiency (F/G) was better and number of days to reach 100 kg was shorter for pigs fed with rough rice as compared to pigs fed the control diet. Digestibility studies conducted when the pigs were 75 kg showed no significant difference among the diets. Upon reaching 100 kg the pigs were slaughtered and different carcass characteristics were obtained. No ssignificant differences were observed among the parameters studied although pigs fed rough rice exhibited better carcass quality compared to pigs fed with the control diet. The results of this study indicate that low quality rough rice can be incorporated in the diets of finishing pigs up to 50%
