Path coefficient analysis for yield determination in sesame

Twenty sesame varieties were evaluated for the association of the yield with other agronomic characters by correlation coefficient and path coefficient analysis. Yield was observed to have high positive correlation with the number of seeds per capsule, number of capsules per plant, plant height, dry matter production (DMP), maturity and flowering. The path coefficient analysis showed that the number the most important contributor to the inheritance of studied traits, except days to silking and weight of 1,000 grains which were conditioned more by additive gene effects which accounted for about one-half of the total variation due to heterosis and deviation effects was observed in some yield components. In most cases, however, the contributions of additive, heterosis, and deviation effects were less than the dominance effects. Performance of three-parent and four-parent composites predicted using estimated genetic effects were similar to those of the variety hybrids
