Germplasm collection, evaluation and maintenance of cigar filler tobacco

The characters of 90 varieties and strains of cigar filler tobacco were evaluated and studied to determine which of them carries the desirable genes for the development of more superior varieties. For length of leaves BPI tobacco No. 1 Espada, Javiz 7A, Vizcaya 1ES and Repollo gave the longest leaves. For width, Javiz 7A, Baria Samkong, Hibrido 295, Maramviz 1 and Repollo PTA produced the broadest leaves. Javiz 7A, BPI Tobacco No. 1, Hibrido 230, Vizcaya 1ES and Hibrido 295 had the largest stalks. Hibrido 230, Repollo, Hibrido 295, Siate, Vizax 19 registered the shortest length of middle internode. In height BPI Tobacco No. 1, Espada, Havana 301, Hibrido 225, and Hibrido 230 were the tallest. For the number of leaves Hibrido 230, Simmaba No. 3, BPI Tobacco No. 1, Vizcaya and Simmaba No. 2 produced the most number of leaves. BPI Tobacco No. 1, Vizcaya, Espada, Igorote, John Jarao Pandaka gave the highest yield of cured leaves. For grade index BPI Tobacco No. 1, Javiz 7A, Igorote and Vizcaya PTA produced the best. BPI Tobacco No. 1, Vizcaya S.A. and Vizcaya PTA gave the highest crop value among the entries
