Beef cattle production integrated with sugarcane farming in Negros Occidental [Philippines]

Results showed that feeds for cattle consisted of 75.69% roughage (mostly cane tops with fresh ipil-ipil) and 24.31% concentrate (rice bran, molasses, urea, dried ipil-ipil, bone meal and copra meal). Feed costs amounted to an average of P3.48/hd/day for maintenance and P4.48/hd/day for finishing. Field analysis showed that young (7 months) sugarcane plant has high crude protein but low dry matter yield/ha and a decreased digestibility. Phil 6607 showed its potential as forage. This variety had higher CP in whole cane (4.44%) and in tops (4.61%) which also produces higher forage yield. Generally, cattle with sugarcane farming was found economically profitable. A hectare of sugarcane used as forage alone which can support 31 head of cattle can yield a net income of P32,793.00 while the same crop used for sugar yield P2,923 only
