The biology and behavior of the Asian corn borer, Ostrinia furnacalis Guenee (Pyralidae: Lepidoptera) on cotton

The biology and the behavior of the Asian corn borer, Ostrinia furnacalis Guenee, on cotton was studied in the laboratory and in the greenhouse. The average incubation period of the eggs was 3.5 days. There were five larval instars, each with 3-5 days duration, when reared on cotton leaves and immature bolls in the laboratory. Larval period averaged 17.9 days for males and 18.7 days for females, while the life cycle was 26.9 and 28 days for males and females, respectively. Body dimensions of the different stages are given. Each female laid an average of 4.3 egg masses with 12.9 eggs per egg mass; 49.2% of the eggs are fertile. In the greenhouse, O. furnacalis laid eggs on 3-18 weeks old cotton leaves with the 15 week old leaves being most preferred. About 18.4% of the eggs were laid on the lower leaf surface
