Influence of sources and rate of nitrogen fertilizer on para grass (Brachiaria mutica (Forsk.) Stapf) production grown on Nakhon Pathom, Kamphaeng Saen, Muak Lek and Chai Badan soils [Thailand]

Pot experiment was established to determine the influence of N sources and N rates on oven-dry forage yields, N. yields, protein yields, N recovery and other chemical composition of para grass grown on Nakhon Pathom, Kamphaeng Saen, Muak Lek and Chai Badan soil series at the Department of Soil Science, Kasetsart University (Bangkhen campus) for a period of six months. Nitrogen sources were ammonium sulphate, ammonium chloride and urea while five N rates, (0, 0.64, 1.28, 1.92 and 2.56 g N/pot) were employed. These four soil series were the most common soils used for growing forage crops for dairy cow production in the western and central parts of Thailand. Oven-dry forage yields, N and protein yields of para grass grown on all soil series applied with different sources of N fertilizer were the highest at N rate of 2.56 g n/pot, but the highest response per unit of N fertilizer used were found at the rates ranged from 0.64-1.28 g N/pot. Oven-dry forage yields were increased at the same amount from all N sources and all of the soil series except Muak Lek soil, when fertilizer N were applied at low rate (0.64 g N/pot). Total recoveries of fertilizer N in the systems ranged from 44 to 60 percent of that N applied. The influences of N sources on phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium content in para grass grown on all of the soil series were similar. But the amount of iron and manganese contents in para grass received ammonium sulfate and ammonium chloride N source was higher than that received urea N source
