Effect of SADH [succinic acid 2,2-dimethyl hydrazide] on growth, biochemical changes and yield of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) cv. S.J.5

SADH (succinic acid 2,2-dimethyl hydrazide) was found to reduce height of the plant, slightly increased stem thickness thus making the plant compact. SADH treated plant had greener leaves. However, at higher concentration, SADH caused chlorosis during the production of young pod (8th week). Although it had no effect on the number of flower, it worked against abscission and pod-thinning, when the treatment was conducted during the pre-flowering or the flowering period. Treatment of 300 ppm SADH during pre-flowering period yielded the best result with respect to seed production in weight, size and seed number. Dry weight of various part of soybean was higher. The number and size of the nodules also increased. Finally, the treatment was found to increase the storage of nitrogen and phosphorus in the leaves and potassium in the stem, while the storage of carbon was decreased
