The studies of the effect of rock phosphate application on root distribution of rice plants in acid sulphate soil

The effect of rock phosphate on root distribution of rice plant in acid sulfate soil was studied. Two rice varieties namely: RD.1 and Matchanda were chosen for this experiment. The result indicated that root distribution of Matchanda variety was better than RD 1. The optimum rate of phosphorus application for the two varieties was 4 g P/10 kg soil in the form of rock phosphate which gave good root distribution, dry root weight and number of tillers in Bangkhen, Rangsit and Rangsit very acid soil series. The best spacing for RD 1 and Matchanda were 20 x 20 cm. and 25 x 25 cm. respectively. Macronutrient uptake of RD 1 was better than Matchanda in all treatments. The application of phosphorus in acid soil was strongly recommended. Potassium content in Matchanda variety was lower than the critical level (0.1 percent K). In the Bangkhen, Rangsit and Rangsit very acid soil series, rate of potassium application should be carefully considered to maintain normal growth of rice plant
