Fattening of cattle by silage

It was investigated the effect of feeding fattened cattle by maize stalk just after harvest with addition of raw beet pulp which increased moisture content (70:30). The experiment was conducted on 80 young Simmental oxen devided into 4 groups (20 oxen in every group). Before the experiment the young oxen were fed mainly by concentrate feed till the weight of 200 kg. During the period between coming to the fattening stable (with about 200kg weight) to the beginning of the experiment, they were fed also by maize silage. On that way they were accustomed to the great amounts of feeding portions. The experimental fattening began when they had weight of 230kg. They were fed together, three times a day. It was concluded that by using greater amounts of silage of the whole maize plant, which enabled the 60% of energetic needs in the structure of daily feed portion for fattened oxen, it could be obtained the high daily weight gain of more than 1300g. The average daily weight gain was 1393g, while the weight gain of the oxen fattened by the silage of the whole maize plant and dry maize grain was 1308-1407g. The fattening by that silages was of great importance because on that way the food value of the whole maize plant in the beef production was used. It was concluded that maize stalk could be of good usage in cattle fattening, and the maize silage could be prepared with some other fodder crops which had more content of moisture (beet pulp, sugar beet root or sugar beet leaf).
