Nectria ditissima Tul. - serious problem of beech copicces stands [Fagus sylvatica L.]

The phenomenon of Nectria ditissima Tul. was analysed in the sprouting beech-woods in SR Bosnia and Herzegovina (Yugoslavia), the area of the spreading of pathogenes, symptoms and intensity in various habitats. At the investigated localities some pathogenes from the Nectria ditissima were isolated, whereas in the area around them not a single sort of insects was found. N. ditissima is usually found on branches and twigs of 1-20 cm in diameter and 30 year old trunks. It can be exceptionally found on thinner branches of older trees. The parasite infects the trunks through injuries on the bark. After the changes in the colour of the bark which turns light brown, a distinctly sinking necroses which gradually turn into boils. Very often there are several boils forming on one trunk which may become crooked. In some cases these boils completely cover the branches or the trunk which causes the decay of the tree top. Sometimes the boils cover the calus, too. The fungus is active for 4-5 years and in some cases even 11. The infected places can heal. The fruit bearing organs appear comparatively quickly on the damaged bark.
