[The content of selenium in the soil and feed in different regions in Yugoslavia and its application by lambs]

Many regions in Yugoslavia have not enough selenium in soil. Only in localities of Cupres, Gai and Novatsi (SFRY) is found the surplus of this element. The level of selenium in soil is not influenced by factors as are: type of soil, pH value and content of organic substances. The selenium concentration is varying not only between each region, but also between the localities of the same region (5 to 250 mg/kg). All investigated nutrients have significantly small selenium (less than 0,1 mg/kg). The gotten results from investigated fattening lambs prove the justification of adding selenium into diet. This complementation resulted in better weight gain increasement. The difference between the experimental group of animals with selenium usage of 0,2 mg/kg of food and control group of animals is statistically significant(P is less than 0,1). Internal organs differently adopt selenium which is carried into organism by food. It is most intensively adopted by kidneys, then by liver and at last by heart. the difference in selenium concentration in kidneys, liver and heart of experimental and control groups of lambs is highly significant (P less than 0,05). Between the quantity of selenium deposited in wool and thickness of wool fiber is found the positive correlation, which was not statistically significant.
