Five different fields were sampled to examine the number of ovules per pistil in Brassica juncea (SC) and in two cultivars (one SC and one SI) of B. campestris. Wide range of variation for the number of ovules per pistil (12.6 to 34.2) was observed among the plants of the three types of Brassica. The number of ovules per pistil determined by the squash method varied significantly within and between the three types. The mean ovule per pistil of 15.1, 18.9 and 25.8 was observed for juncea, SI and SC campestris, respectively. Highly significant "Between cultivars" and "Between plants" variation for ovule number was detected for all three Brassica types indicating the presence of considerable amount of genetic variation for this trait. Number of seeds per siliqua also exhibited similar range of variation
