Chemical characteristics of some soils from the coastal areas of Noakhali district [Bangladesh]

Twenty-two soil samples belonging to five pedons from the coastal areas of Noakhali district Bangladesh were analysed in the laboratory. Organic carbon content was slightly higher than one per cent in the surface soils which tended to decrease with depth. The cation exchange capacity ranged from 13.0 to 23.2 me/100g soil with an average of 17.4 me/100 g soil. Ca++ was the dominant base followed by Mg++ in the exchange complex. Exchangeable Na+ ranged from 0.63 to 3.0 me/100 g soil and the exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP) was less than 15 in all the soils. Exchangeable K+ was the least abundant cation in these soils whose amount varied from 0.23 to 0.78 me/100 g soil. Potassium content is, therefore, moderate to high and the soils are not deficient in potassium. per cent base saturation of the soils are high. pH of the soils ranged from 7.4 to 8.2. When pH of the soils was determined with N KCl solution there was a drop of pH values from 0.4 to 0.8. In all the pedons the pH showed an increase with depth.
