Effect of effective and ineffective strains of Rhizobium japonicum on the growth and yield of soybean

A study was conducted to investigate the effect of seed inoculation with a single inoculum containing only Rhizobium japonicum SEB-5 and double inocula containing both R. japonicum EB-5 and R. japonicum 33 on plant growth, nodulation and N(2) fixation in soybean. The results of these two experiments, one with a single inoculum and the other with double inocula for seed inoculation were not significantly different. However, the mean values for nodule weight, weight of root and shoot per cent N and total N content of soybean plants were higher when seeds were inoculated with single, effective inoculum. Similarly, the competitive indices for the inoculated plants receiving benomyl was high with a single inoculum than with the double inocula. These results suggests some sort of competition in the rhizosphere of soybean to reduce plant growth, nodulation and N(2) fixation as a result of seed inoculation with double inocula in which one strain was ineffective.
