Effect of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium on spikelet sterility induced by high temperature at heading stage of rice

The percent spikelet sterility induced by high temperature at 35/27oC (day/night) at the heading stage of rice increased with the increase of nitrogen supplyAt 38/27oC the effect of nitrogen was not clear. Increased nitrogen content in the plant due to increased nitrogen supply was more conspicuous in N22 though with less sterility than BKN6624-46-2. The percent spikelet sterility induced by high temperature decreased when phosphorus supply was increased from 0.5 to 2.0 ppm; but at 10 ppm phosphorus, the percent spikelet sterility increased again in N2 while in BKN6624-46-2 the percent spikelet sterility decreased further at 35/2 7oC and remained similar at 38/27oC. The percent spikelet sterility induced by high temperature decreased remarkably with the increse of potassium supply. Higher potassium supply increased potassium content and decreased nitrogen content in the plant with increased K=N ratio. The results suggest that potassium play an important role to counteract the high temperature damage at heading of rice
